Study Abroad

A period of study abroad can be undertaken on the LLB Laws (including Study Abroad).

Our students get a huge amount from our study abroad programme, returning to Essex with greater levels of maturity and a renewed sense of purpose.

By undertaking a study abroad course, you also have the opportunity to gain new skills and develop a more international outlook, particularly with a view to sharing and improving your new legal and cultural knowledge. The marks you obtain abroad will also contribute towards your final degree.

Our students love their year abroad

We asked our students what they thought of their year abroad. They said they loved the opportunity to study at one of our international partners.

The benefits highlighted by our students included:

  • experiencing a new educational and cultural environment;
  • gaining friends, contacts and a different perspective on legal subjects;
  • enhancing employability in a global legal market place;
  • developing independence and confidence in dealing with new situations;
  • improving language skills; and
  • having a good time.

Studying abroad in English

If you want to study abroad but do not feel comfortable learning another language, then there are plenty of countries where teaching is delivered in English.

European countries with modules taught in English are The Netherlands, Greece and Sweden. We also have partner institutions in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong.

Develop your language skills

Studying in Germany, Austria, France, Italy or Spain gives you the chance to immerse yourself in the local language and culture.

That means you will need to show you are fluent in the language required when you apply for study abroad. For example, you will need a minimum of grade B at A-level in the required language, unless you are a native of your chosen country or can demonstrate good enough language skills in another way. We are happy to help if you have any questions.

Help with languages

If you are going to a country where you need to speak a specific foreign language fluently, we will help you by providing two years of language tuition before you go abroad.

You may be exempted from this tuition if you already have extremely good language skills.

Unfortunately this language tuition is only available to you if you are already proficient in a language, as we do not feel it possible to learn a language from beginner level in the time available.
