Direct Second-Year Entrance
Courses you can apply for
Direct second-year entrance is only available on the following courses:
- M100 - LLB Law (3-year course)
- M120 - LLB Laws (International Exchange)(4-year course)
We cannot accept transfers into our third year in any circumstances because you
need to have studied at Essex for at least two years to be awarded a University
of Essex degree.
Direct Entrance Requirements
You are allowed to transfer credits from other United Kingdom universities and be exempted from the compulsory modules at Essex that you have passed elsewhere.
We only accept students for direct-second year entry in exceptional situations and if you wish to apply you must meet the following requirements:
- You must have been eligible for entry to Essex University through your pre-University studies (For example, you gain at least ABB across 3 A Levels);
- You must have followed first year modules in law which are very similar to our own in terms of the subjects studied;
- You must have achieved grades satisfactory to us in your first year exams and term-time essays. We require an average grade of 2.1 standard in the first year studied elsewhere;
- You must provide us satisfactory references from those who have taught you at your current University;
- You must provide a good reason for seeking a transfer to the University of Essex.
Applications
You can contact the University informally before submitting a formal UCAS application for direct second-year entry, but you must ensure that you have satisfied the requirements above.
Your formal application must be via UCAS, making sure that you have indicated you wish to be considered for the second year of entry on the application. The reference required on the UCAS form must be from a current lecturer or tutor at the University at which you are currently studying.
Course Requirements
The following modules are taught in the first year at Essex:
- Constitutional Law.
- Contract.
- Criminal Law.
- Land Law.
- Legal Skills.
You must have completed similar modules at your institution to qualify for
direct second-year entry to Essex. In order to gain exemption from the same
modules at Essex as those studied at your first institution you need to ensure the following key elements were taught – either as part of the above modules or in addition to them:
- An introduction to the Human Rights Act and the protection of human rights
in the UK.
- An introduction to the European Union – including the composition of the
constitutional bodies or the EU, and the effect of EU legislation in member
states, particularly the UK.
We may be able to exempt students from other modules, including Administrative
Law, Equity and Trusts and Tort Law. However, students must be able to transfer
with at least 3 subject exemptions.
You must provide a full syllabus listing for each module for which you
hope to gain exemption at Essex.
Re-sit Examinations
We cannot accept students who have to re-sit modules.
