International perspective on law
We have a uniquely international approach to the study of law. We work
with organisations, companies and governments around the globe, welcome
students from across the world; offer our LLB English and French Laws (with
Maîtrise/Master 1) and specialise in studying areas of law which break
through national boundaries, including human rights and European Union law.
"Academically, the tutors and lecturers were always on
hand and available to talk to you after class. Essex was a fantastic
experience and I hope to keep in touch!" Edouard Raffour, LLB English and
French Law (with Maitrise Master 1)
Preparing you for your career
You have a choice between several undergraduate LLB programmes which all
meet the Law Society’s requirements for qualifying law degrees. This lets
you go straight on to professional training to become a solicitor or
barrister once you graduate.
Completing a law degree course at Essex can be your first step towards a
career in law, but the skills you learn will also prepare you for many other
careers as our courses encourage you to think independently and teach you to
present clear, accurate and compelling arguments.
Committed to excellent law teaching
Our courses are designed around the needs of our students. This means
plenty of time is built into the teaching schedule for you to engage in
quality reflection and private study. Our academics are dedicated to their
teaching and this is reflected in the enthusiasm they show for working with you
in lectures, tutorials and seminars.
"All the staff within the School were
welcoming and never too busy to help. Throughout my course I relished the
modules on company law and the law of the European Union. I found them
fascinating and continued to study these during my Legal Practice Course.
These have essentially shaped my future as they are the areas of law that I
am currently practising." Ashton Carter, LLB Law.
Outstanding legal research reputation
Research within the School is tackling some of the most important issues
facing UK, European and International legal systems. In the last Research
Assessment Exercise in 2008, 90 per cent of our research was ranked as
“internationally recognised”, “internationally excellent” or
“world-leading”. We believe research is a fundamental aspect of our teaching
and allows our students to study the latest issues in law and analyse
cutting-edge developments. Research in the School of Law.
"I love how we are able
to think for ourselves and analyse the problems before us. It’s a really
enjoyable challenge!" Helene-Rose Kinsey-Grumbach, LLB English Law and
French Laws.
That little bit extra…
There are lots of extra-curricular activities which we organise to build
the skills you need to pursue a legal career. We also have long established links with many leading
law firms, from global giant Clifford Chance through to leading local solicitors
such as Birkett Long.
Extra-curricular activities include our Essex Law Clinic which gives our
law students a unique opportunity to gain experience of dealing with real
legal problems and our award-winning volunteer project Essex Street Law.
Our annual Law Careers Fair at our Colchester Campus provides the chance
to meet face-to-face with representatives from leading law firms.
To help those wanting to go on to a legal career we also have an
arrangement with the College of Law which guarantees a place on the Legal
Practice Course or Bar Professional Training Course for any student
graduating with at least a lower second class (2:2) degree.
