Postgraduate Scholarships

We offer many scholarships and bursaries open to our Masters and PhD students to support your postgraduate studies at Essex.

We are part of the University’s Doctoral Training Centre this means you can also apply for Economic and Social Research Council-funded postgraduate studentships at Essex.

Taught LLM Scholarships

Giulia Mereu Scholarship

Giulia Mereu Scholarship [for LLM in International Human Rights Law students and LLM in International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law ONLY]

This scholarship which is awarded annually has been established by the family and friends of Giulia Mereu who lost her life at age 26, in 1996, while monitoring human rights violations in the former Yugoslavia. She had been an Intern with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and was serving as a Civil Affairs Officer with the United Nations Transitional Administration for Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Sirmium when the tragedy occurred. The aim of the scholarship is to enable those who might otherwise not be able to study the discipline of human rights to do so and to ensure that Giulia Mereu's ideals live on.

This scholarship, instituted in 1997, covers the equivalent of HOME/EU TUITION FEES for the academic year as well as a modest allowance to enable the recipient to undertake a one-month internship with a human rights organisation.

Eligibility and Criteria

The candidate should have relevant field experience in Human Rights, working in a country in a situation of acute crisis as Giulia did, and should not have the means to pay for postgraduate studies at Essex

You must hold an offer of a place on the LLM in International Human Rights Law or the LLM in International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law.

The deadline date for applications has now passed. The successful applicant will be contacted by Monday 8 July 2013.

It is expected that all applicants for the Giulia Mereu Scholarship will have sought funding elsewhere.

Tinson Scholarships

The highly contested Tinson Fund is available for students from the former Soviet Bloc who are interested in studying postgraduate taught law.  This fund is for fees only not living expenses. You should send a letter (approximately 500-800 words) in support of your application explaining your reasons for applying for the scholarship to:

The deadline date for applications is the second week of May every year. The successful applicants will be contacted by post.  

Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)

We have a number of Masters and Doctoral Studentships awards through the AHRC Block Grant Partnership awards scheme. These scholarships are available to applicants from the UK (home students) and European Union countries. Applications will be considered if you are holding an offer of a place in any of the LLM taught courses offered at our School of Law. The application form for this scholarship will be available through your MyEssex applicant portal when your offer is formally confirmed to you via e-mail. For further information on the funding visit the AHRC website. There is also AHRC funding available for postgraduate PhD research.  

Santander Masters Scholarships

Scholarships funded by the Santander Group, are available for taught postgraduate study at Essex. The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic merit to students who would not otherwise be able to take up a place at Essex.

PhD Scholarships

University of Essex Scholarship

We wish to attract and support talented PhD students. Scholarships worth more than £700,000 are distributed across our University every year. Our School of Law has a share of the University of Essex Scholarship  fund which is used to support students.  

Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)

We have a number of Masters and Doctoral Studentship awards through the AHRC Block Grant Partnership awards scheme. These scholarships are available to applicants from the UK (home students) and European Union countries.

The University of Essex Silberrad Scholarship

Our University of Essex Silberrad Scholarships are awarded by the University to provide support for our own graduates to pursue PhD study. The scholarships are funded by a legacy from the Silberrad Estate, which was bequeathed to our University in 2007.

Modern Law Review Scholarships

The Modern Law Review Scholarships are available to give financial support to outstanding research students engaged on doctoral research at a university in the United Kingdom on any subject broadly within the publishing interests of the Review.  These scholarships are awarded by annual competition based on nominations to be submitted by the Head of School for the university in which the applicant is, or will be, registered as a research student.  

Postgrad Solutions Ltd Bursaries (external bursary)

Postgrad Solutions offers a number of postgraduate bursaries including bursaries specifically for LLM students. A panel of judges select the winners on the basis of who they feel is the most deserving case, based on what is written in their application. Payment of the award will be made directly to the institution and discounted from the fees as appropriate. You may only apply for a bursary after you have accepted an offer of a place at your chosen institution.
