Teaching and Assessment

Teaching at postgraduate level

Within our School, we aim to use small group teaching so you have the right environment to learn, develop your ideas and discuss issues with academics and fellow students. You are mainly taught through seminars where you discuss legal issues and may be asked to make presentations. Your seminars will be supplemented by lectures, where necessary.

Teaching will encourage you to think about the conceptual issues underlying the various topics you will be looking at, but we also focus on the practical application of the law to various situations.

Full details of teaching and assessment for each course  are included in our course finder.

Research opportunities

As part of your studies you can undertake supervised independent research so you achieve an in-depth understanding of the subject. This will give you a solid basis for further academic study and an additional perspective on your work, if you are resuming a career as a legal practitioner.

How you will be assessed

You are mainly assessed by written coursework and submission of a 15,000-20,000 word dissertation at the end of the year. Some modules are assessed by written examination, which includes take-home examinations. In order to proceed to the dissertation stage of your course, you need to have received satisfactory marks for your examinations and coursework.
