Student Profiles - Graduates of the School

Edouard Raffour, LLB English and French Law (with Maitrise) 2010

Edouard is currently a trainee in a law firm in Banbury, Oxfordshire. He will soon be returning to the University of Paris, where he spent his time studying abroad, to complete his Masters in Law.

"I always wanted to study law and I was looking for a university that would allow me to study abroad but also give me the opportunity to return to France during my studies. Essex offered exactly what I wanted and I was really excited abut studying in the UK.

It is always easy to socialise with people from your home country or with people that share a similar background, however Essex is so diverse that I found it really easy to make friends with people from all over the world. There were lots of events organised to help people meet in the first week and current students who were already studying were very happy to help me if I was ever looking a bit lost.

Academically, the tutors and lecturers were always on hand and available to talk to you after class.  They were also happy to arrange an appointment for you to discuss anything that you needed with regards to the course. My favourite module was Public International Law as this was a particularly interesting class and enjoyed the group discussions. The School of Law is incredible; I was so impressed with how efficient they were in all situations.

The University also organises a law fair which is really important for law students so that they can find out about all of the opportunities available when they graduate. Essex was a fantastic experience and I hope to keep in touch!"

Ashton Carter, LLB Law 2008, Colchester, Essex.

After graduating, Ashton completed his Legal Practice Course at BPP Law School in London and is now a paralegal for Fisher Jones Greenwood LLP.

"All of the staff within the School were welcoming and never too busy to help. Throughout my course I relished the modules on company law and the law of the European Union. I found them fascinating, and continued to study these during my Legal Practice Course. These have essentially shaped my future, as they are the areas of law that I am currently practising."

Sam Rozeti, LLB Law 2007, Muswell Hill, London.

Directly after completing his course, Sam joined an investment bank. After qualifying as an accountant, he decided to return to law and acquired a training contract with the international firm K&L Gates.

"The School offered many optional modules appealing to various interests, ranging from international and employment to criminal and family law. Despite being a large school, I was able to get to know many members of academic staff, which was incredibly helpful when I began to consider my next career steps.

"I found the environment of the Colchester Campus amazing! The fact we had our lectures, our accommodation, and all our social facilities on one site helped create a brilliant student atmosphere. I felt part of the University from day one.

"During my time at Essex I really immersed myself into student life by taking part in all that the University had to offer. I became President of the Law Society and even organised the annual Law Ball. It helped me to get in contact with a large number of national and international law firms; one of which invited me to undertake a summer internship.

"Furthermore, I became elected to the executive of the National Union of Students (NUS), a role that enabled me to visit universities all over the country, as well as being an executive of the Students’ Union. My favourite memory of life at Essex was the rich and diverse campus. There were so many opportunities to get involved and meet like-minded people who I am sure to know for the rest of my life."
