SELECT Law Lectures

The University of Essex, School of Law have hosted a number of very successful Suffolk & North Essex Law Society CPD lectures this year. Land registration, Company Law and an update on the Mental Capacity Act by Judge Denzil Lush are just some of the legal matters being covered the lectures for the local legal profession.

Organised by the University’s School of Law, with the Suffolk and North Essex Law Society, Select 2009 takes place at the University’s Colchester Campus or University Campus Suffolk’s Waterfront Building in Ipswich. The lectures run from March through to July, with more planned for September and October.

The cost of each course is £80 for SNELS members and £120 for non-members. Each carries three CPD points and is accredited by the Law Society, the Solicitor’s Regulation Authority, the Bar Council, the Institute of Legal Executives and the Council of Licensed Conveyancers.

Twenty-second Annual Essex Law Lecture

This year Annual Essex Law Lecture in association with Suffolk & Northe Essex Law Society will be given by Michael Mansfield QC on the evening of the 10 March 2010.

Company Law Essay 2008-09 Prize

This year's winner for the Company Law Essay Prize is Eleanor Rippengale, 2nd year LLB student. Other students who were recognised for their outstanding achievement on the Company Law Essay were Jessica Ames, Burnston Fan, Alexandra Nash, Ravinder Sidhu, Cathy Wood and Tatiana Zenina.


The Seventh University of Essex Clifford Chance Law Lecture

This year's lecture will be given by Baroness Onora O'Neill of Bengarve at the offices of Clifford Chance on the evening of Wednesday 2 December 2009.  The title will be: 'What makes good legislation?'

Slave Trade Reparations Project

Fernne Brennan launches new website for the Slave Trade Reparations (STeR) project. STeR follows on from the successful November 2008 conference, Colonialism, Slavery, Reparations and Trade: Remedying the ‘Past’?. Audio files of the conference addresses can be accessed in the Events section on the STeR web site.

A feature of the STeR project is the formation of an Expert Advisory Group (EAG). Many of the eminent conference speakers have agreed to cooperate with the EAG, Professor Theo van Boven, Professor Dinah Shelton, Professor Rhoda Howard-Hassmann amongst others. Nuffield Foundation

On the 1st June 2009 a seminar was held at the Nuffield Foundation to launch: The Dynamics of Judicial Review Litigation: The Resolution of Public Law Challenges before Final Hearings. This reports the findings of Nuffield Funded research undertaken under the auspices of the Human Rights Centre in collaboration with the Public Law Project.  The report is co-authored with Varda Bondy.


Law Experience

The School of Law runs Law Experience event for prospective students every year. Around 50 student from colleges across Essex and Suffolk attended the Law Experience 2009 event on Tuesday 14 July 2009. Some very interesting sessions were run from How to Apply to University to Up to Heaven and down to Hell - what does a land-owner actual own? This is a great chance to get a taste of what it might be like to study law at university. The University of Essex, School of Law will be running event like this again next year.If you are interested in attending our next event please email Gail Chapman.
