Essex Street Law

As a student with us you can take part in our award-winning Street Law project, which encourages secondary school pupils to develop an understanding of how the law has a real impact on their everyday lives.

Unique scheme led by Essex students

This is the first voluntary scheme of its kind in the country and sees our second and third-year students visit secondary schools to deliver thought provoking sessions on legal issues.

Essex Street Law lets you gain invaluable experience in organising mock trials, negotiations, mediations and debating. It also develops your knowledge of engaging the public with issues surrounding the law.

Essex Street Law also gives school pupils the chance to gain an important insight into legal issues in a fun and interactive way.

Mock trial day

Mock trial competitions are organised by Essex Street Law volunteers to give school pupils the chance to demonstrate the skills they have learnt.

During the day, children take on the roles of barristers and even the defendant, getting a real taste of just what happens in a courtroom. They also get a chance to talk to our students and see what life is like at a university.

Further information for students and schools

Students interested in joining in Essex Street Law or schools wanting to take part, should e-mail Ross Hockley, Street Law Co-ordinator at: rhockl@essex.ac.uk

More information is available from our University of Essex Law Society.
