Prestigious department
We are one of the largest and most prestigious departments for English
language and linguistics research in the UK, rated fourth overall in the
most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE, December 2008). We were also
rated first for having the highest proportion of linguistics research which
is “world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour”. You
will learn from leading
academics in their respective fields.
In modern languages, we offer quality teaching, an excellent
staff-student ratio, cultural studies as well as a focus on professional
training in translation, interpreting and subtitling.
Wide choice of courses
We offer undergraduate courses in three areas:
We offer many different courses within these areas. Our single honours
courses enable you to focus on a subject in great detail, while our joint
honours courses give you the option of continuing to study a second subject
that you enjoy.
Flexible course structure
All our courses offer a highly flexible, modular structure. You can build
a programme that suits your interests by choosing from the
150 undergraduate modules that we offer across our language and
linguistics courses. You also have the option to change your course at the
end of your first or second year.

The student experience is at the heart of what we do and we are proud
that our students rated us at 96 per cent overall satisfaction in the 2012
National Student Satisfaction Survey.
