Study with us

Listen to our first-year students tell us why they chose to study languages and why they chose Essex.

Language enables us to transmit knowledge and get things done, from inviting someone for a coffee and falling in love to explaining the latest scientific theories or settling global political disputes. When you study language and linguistics, you open the door to a whole new world.

Only in a department as established as ours can you:

  • tailor your course to your unique interests by choosing from over 150 modules
  • take courses in interpreting, translation and subtitling - the only UK university offering this
  • learn from experts in all major branches of linguistics
  • unlike other universities, you can study up to four languages (provided you've already studied two languages at A-Level)
  • enjoy great facilities
  • change your course at the end of your first year (provided you've taken the core modules needed for your new course)

If you're ambitious and curious about language and its relationship to the world, welcome to Essex.
