Our new interpreting training lab gives you the tools to become an expert in conference interpreting. We also have a
lab to interpret lectures of up to 350 people. These are the only labs of their kind in East Anglia.
We are one of the largest and most prestigious departments for English

universities to offer the study of interpreting, translation and subtitling
in a joint course.

for you. You work with your supervisor, not for them. We want students with
purpose - those who want to use their postgraduate research to push
themselves but also make a contribution to the research environment and

We offer postgraduate taught double degrees with our international partners. These degrees are 1+1 progression
arrangements where you work for two Master’s degrees, one at Essex and another at a prestigious university across the globe.
By undertaking your language and linguistics postgraduate research in our Department, you will become a member of an exciting and active research community, and benefit from the expert
supervision of our internationally recognised staff.
Our Masters courses offer in-depth study of a range of specialisms including phonology, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics,
translation, interpreting and TEFL, and are an excellent preparation for PhD study.
All our students can learn languages in a number of ways, including as part of your degree, in evening
classes or online at no extra cost, or via Essex Modern Language Certificates.
