Study with us

Masters courses

Student studying in the library

Our Masters courses offer in-depth study of a range of specialisms including phonology, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, translation, interpreting and TEFL, and are an excellent preparation for PhD study.

We have a large and thriving graduate community of taught masters and research students that provides an active and stimulating environment in which to learn and carry out research. As a masters student you can chose from nearly 90 postgraduate modules in linguistics or translation and interpreting.

Our research credentials

We are one of the largest and most prestigious departments for English language and linguistics research in the UK, rated fourth overall in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE, December 2008). We were also rated first for having the highest proportion of linguistics research which is “world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour”. Our research feeds directly into our teaching to ensure that you have a learning experience of the highest quality.

PhD supervision by world-leading academics

If you are a research student you will immediately benefit from the strong group culture in our Department and will join the research group most closely aligned to your area of interest. You will normally have one academic supervisor who advises and guides you through your research, but will be able to discuss your work and get feedback from any member of staff in our Department.

Opportunities to present your research

We offer lots of opportunities to present your research, whether this is at our weekly seminar or one of our annual graduate conferences.

This gives you excellent opportunities to practice your conference presentation skills.

We also publish Essex Graduate Student Papers in Language and Linguistics, an annual collection of papers written by graduate students in our Department. This gives you experience in preparing a paper for publishing.
