Language and linguistics conferences
Student-run conferences
We host three student-run conferences annually. Students organise every
aspect of these, from judging and selecting abstracts, to arranging the
programme and managing publicity, to inviting keynote speakers.
This tradition, going back to the 1980s, gives our students crucial
skills and experience in professional research activities. It is also
an opportunity to present their research in friendly surroundings, to work
productively with their peers, and to enjoy a post-conference celebration at
the end of the year.
SociolinguistEssex
The longest-running student conference, SociolinguistEssex, showcases work by students on our
MA and PhD courses in sociolinguistics, as well as programme staff, and is held in June.
Essex Graduate Conference in Linguistics (EGCL)
The Essex Graduate Conference in Linguistics (EGCL), held every
spring, welcomes topics from any area of theoretical or applied linguistics,
including sociolinguistics and psycholinguistics.
Both of these conferences also feature work by final-year undergraduates who have
completed research projects. Presentations may lead to publication in the
Essex Graduate Student Papers in Language and Linguistics (EGSPLL).
LangUE
Language at the University of Essex (LangUE)
is an international
postgraduate conference bringing together student researchers from the UK,
Europe, North America and Asia, as well as internationally renowned keynote
speakers, and has published several volumes of proceedings.
Essex Language Conference for Teachers
The Essex Language Conference for Teachers is an annual one-day conference for teachers of modern
foreign languages, teachers of English language and other teachers interested in language(s) in the widest sense to share ideas
and be inspired about language teaching.
Our other conferences
We also regularly host other professional conferences and workshops, many sponsored by the UK Research Councils,
which provide opportunities for students to hear and engage with leading
figures in the field.
