There is a vibrant and significant global Spanish-speaking population out there! There are approximately 425 million Spanish-speakers scattered all over  the world and their number is increasing!

Spanish around the world
Spanish is the official language of Spain, the whole of Latin America with the exception of Brazil, New Mexico (together with American English), Equatorial Guinea (together with French) and Western Sahara (together with Arabic). It is the second language in the United States and there are many smaller Spanish-speaking communities spread all over the world. Spanish will open the door to all the above cultures and to the increasing cohort of countries where Spanish is taught as a second language like the Festivity in MexicoMiddle East, Greece and China. It is a fact then that Spanish constitutes an invaluable personal and professional asset, more especially so because it has become an important economic factor in the business world. Spanish is also one of the official languages of the European Union.

Spanish at Essex
The Spanish taught at the University of Essex is a standard variety understandable anywhere in the Spanish-speaking world. It is taught as a major language in European Studies, Latin American Studies, Spanish Studies and in combination with various other degrees.
A distinctive feature of Spanish teaching at Essex is that it can be learnt from scratch starting with a 9-month Intensive Initial Spanish double-module which combined with a 4-week summer vacation course in Spain, will enable you to  fast-track to reach an advanced level in one academic year.
