Residence Abroad

An important component of our degree courses is the residence abroad, either in Spain or Latin America, open to those students majoring in Spanish and according to their choice and degree course requirements. A year or term spent studying in Latin America or Spain offers many benefits. We liaise with the Study Abroad Office of the University in finding places and providing induction meetings for students whose degree course require a year of residence abroad.

Obviously study abroad is an excellent opportunity for personal development.  It affords you the chance to become immersed in another culture over a sustained period, and so come to know a country and its people in a way that you could not hope to as a tourist.  You will learn to view the world (and your academic discipline) from another perspective.  It is also an opportunity to experience a different educational system; this requires the development of different skills from those which feature most prominently in the UK system.  Students become more independent and confident as a result of study abroad.

Study abroad enhances employability.  A period of study abroad on your CV not only helps you stand out from other candidates, but also signals to an employer than you Festivity in Mexicohave maturity, adaptability, an ability to fend for yourself, and organisational skills.  Of course, the world of business is becoming increasingly international, and experience of living abroad is in itself attractive to many employers.  Depending upon your study abroad destination, you may have gained fluency in a second language whilst abroad, and this is also helpful in the employment market.

Finally, the chance to meet people from different countries and form friendships is invaluable.  Years after your study abroad experience you may still have close friends in other countries to visit.

Students taking the Intensive Spanish modules have a 4-week period of residence abroad in September of their first year.
