Module Description - Objectives

This is one half of a demanding specialist double module which runs for 6/8 hours a week for 23 weeks and is taken together with LA421 Structures to take students from no Spanish to level B1 in 9 months of intensive study. The modules are designed for students wishing to major in the language and exit at the highest specialist level (level C1 or C2 ). A consolidation Course in Spain (4 weeks) during the summer is a compulsory component of this module. No prerequisites.

The module aims to create an informed awareness of the lexis of Spanish. It helps students to acquire a practical knowledge of register, styles and rhetoric of the written and spoken language and develops a cultural awareness of language in context. There is an emphasis on the spoken production of the language.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students would have achieved a A2 Level within the European Framework for Languages, as below.

A2 Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

 

On successful completion of the Consolidation Course in a Spanish - speaking country students would have achieved level B1 within the European Framework for Languages, as below.

B1 Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

Resit Exams: Students who are required to take September resit exams may sit these in Valencia by notifying the Examinations Office.

ASSESSMENT

 ASSESSMENT: Group Work: Perform first conversation about your project which will be videoed (200 words in Spanish minimum). Follow instructions. Length:5/7 minutes. This work must be prepared in a group on Week 6, Reading Week. List of times.

Week 11
ASSESSMENT

ASSESSMENT(provisional): First 2 hours: Reading and comprehension ; Second 2 Hours: Comprehension and conversation. Both exercises are averaged into one mark. Interview times.
