Module Description and  Objectives

This is one half of a demanding specialist double module which runs for 6/8 hours a week for 23 weeks and is taken
together with
LA422 Sounds & Words to take students from no Spanish to level B1 in 9 months of intensive study.
The modules are designed for students wishing to major in the language and exit at the highest specialist level
(level C1 or C2 ). A consolidation
Course in Spain (4 weeks) during the summer is a compulsory component of this
module. No prerequisites. Entry Level: from scratch


Learning Outcomes for module LA421 (October - April) at the University of Essex: On successful completion of this module students would have achieved
an A2+ Level within the European Framework for Languages, as below.

A2 On successful completion of this module students will understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance
(e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and
direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters
 in areas of immediate need.

Learning Outcomes for the course in Spain (September 4-week): By successful completion of the Consolidation Course in a Spanish - speaking country
 students would have achieved level B1 within the European Framework for Languages, as below.

B1 On successful completion of this course students will understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

As this module is delivered at University level, students will also be able to deal with: a) lengthy readings in their area of study; b)articulate  ideas from others and their own

 in spoken and written Spanish; write précis and summaries on contemporary subjects; write a research project in Spanish about a topic of their interest.

LA421 PROJECT -The project is written through the year with instalments due on Weeks 6 and 20 plus the final document on Week 30.

Resit Exams: Students who are required to take September resit exams may sit these in Valencia by notifying the Examinations Office.

Assessment

Reading Week – No classes - Main Document: LA421 PROJECT - Instructions to write The first draft of projectWeek 6.with Spanish to use in your conversation for LA422. The parts you need to write.
ASSESSMENT: Hand in first draft of project 500 words minimum is due Friday midday. You must submit online (OCS) and hand in a watermarked copy to administrators in Dept. Language & Linguistics by Friday midday.

Week 11
Assessment

 

ASSESSMENT:  Submit your exercises on OCS   and bring a watermarked copy to the administrators in Language and Linguistics by Friday midday Week 11.

Participation mark (a mark for class commitment, contribution and involvement). The final mark is an average of these two components.

ASSESSMENT:End of second term Assignment - Hand in to your teacher all exercises for the 8 weeks (16 - 19 and 21 - 24, word processed and printed, double-sided) GROUP 1 THURSDAY - GROUP 2 FRIDAY.  

Participation mark (a mark for class commitment, contribution and involvement). The final mark is an average of these two components.

Third Term

Week 30
Assessment

ASSESSMENT: LA421 PROJECT. Hand in the final version of the project 2000 words minimum by Friday midday. Submit online (OCS) and hand in a watermarked copy to administrators in Dept. Language & Linguistics by Friday midday.

Revision classes and preparation for the final exam.

Week 32 onwards Exams

ASSESSMENT  - Workload : the 5 pieces above have the same value. Only the best 4 will be considered.
