What you study

Graduate students The key to the study of Modern Languages at Essex is flexibility. For your BA (Hons), you can choose one of our Single Honours programmes which allow you to concentrate on your preferred language. Alternatively, with our BA Modern Languages, you can combine up to four different languages. The Joint Honours programmes are designed for students wishing to combine language study with another subject such as Business Management, Drama, Philosophy or History of Art for example. Furthermore, languages are also taken by students from other University departments as an outside option or as an extra course to enhance their study profile and attractiveness to employers upon graduation.

With all our four-year specialized language programmes of study you will be spending your third year abroad, either in a European or Latin American University. If you wish, you can also choose to work abroad as a language assistant.

We offer a wide range of modules, covering five major languages (Portuguese, Italian, German, Spanish, French). Chinese and Arabic are available at beginners' level, within the Open Language Programme. We offer up to 6 different levels in Portuguese, Italian, German, Spanish and French, going from Initial for beginners through to Final Year Honours for students specialising in a particular language, including also courses such as From the Caves to Modern Graffiti: a Visual History of the Spanish language (LA447), La Dolce Vita: A Journey Across Enduring Italian Traditions (LA647), French Cinema & Culture (LA157) and Germany's Self Image in its Media (LA267). This impressive choice will allow you to find modules matching your exact requirements and existing language skills.
