Project Description
The project offers the opportunity to conduct research into some aspects of Italian language, literature, society, culture or cinema. It aims to develop specialized skills such as translation. It also involves multimedia-based work which will allow you to combine academic work with acquisition of transferable practical skills. Indeed, together with language and culture awareness, through your translation and research. you will be gaining cross cultural skills.
You will be also developing practical and transferable skills by using the software packages. Some of the skills will involve:
- Researching - Gathering and organizing data - Reporting - Presenting - Translating - The voice over of video material
The
project will include two parts:
In the first term you will be working on the translation of the documents and also writing your translator's notes. With the translator's notes you will be concentrating on and pointing out the cultural and linguistic differences between Italian and English. You will give in writing full explanations of your translation choices whenever required. You will be in contact with your teacher /supervisor and submit a draft of your translation work regularly every 2-3 weeks in term time via MyLife.
At the end of the first term you will produce the final draft of the translation with translator's notes. The work will be submitted formally, in hard copy and via OCS as a normal piece of assessed work.
In term two, you will work on the practical skills aspect of your project. In particular, you will deliver a short presentation on the topic and content of your translation. You will translate and produce the voice over of some video material (in English) which will complement your translation. Finally you will write a report in Italian on your work. The work will be submitted formally, in hard copy and via OCS as a normal piece of assessed work.
Learning
and Teaching Methods:
The interaction between you and
teacher will mainly be on a one to one basis in the form of face-to-face
or e-tutorials. You will also have the opportunity to discuss some
aspects of your project both with other students taking the same module
and with the teacher via MyLife. Reading the material suggested by the
teacher and following her guidelines will be paramount to the successful
completion of the module. The independence in reading, researching and
choosing how to translate and report your findings will be greatly
encouraged. The teacher will be in regular contact with students and
their work via MyLife (every 2-3 weeks in term time). Comments and feed
back will be provided regularly on line (within a week from submission
of drafts). Some aspects of the module will be lab based and taught in
Lab L or lab B.
Please note:
Students, who would like to
take this module, will have to propose a viable topic, and get the
agreement of an appropriate member of staff to supervise them. In
particular the work proposed must be original and unpublished
