Module Description
The module is open to students who previously passed LA640 Advanced Italian. It is designed to help you cope successfully with your Year
Abroad (or vacation period) .
With this Module, you are expected to achieve an Effective Operational Proficiency C1 level in Italian as described in the CEFR. The study of the culture will be complemented by weekly debates, reading, writing and practice of translation and interpretation from and into Italian. In the lab, you will be presented a good selection of audio and video material extracted from radio and TV programmes. We will also use material available on the internet.
All the different sessions of the module will work in synergy to prepare you to reach the appropriate linguistic level for your year abroad and, if you are taking this module in your final year, it will prepare you to travel in Italy, read, translate, write and debate confidently in Italian almost on any topic, context or situation.
Your teachers will be mainly involved in facilitating and helping you to become as independent as possible. You will improve and refine your knowledge of Italian language, culture and civilisation.
Textbooks
We have 4 different sessions a week of 1 hour which.
Culture session: We shall read about Italian fiction focussing in particular on the Giallo genre
Debate session: The debates complement the culture session presented by the teacher. You are expected to prepare for the debates by reading the material provided.
Grammar and Writing styles: This is an important part of the course as you will be revising and refining your knowledge of Italian grammar. Writing in different styles will be the exercise that will allow us to study in depth the different layers of the language.
The Lab: We practice oral comprehension of short video clips, TV interviews, debates, documentaries and film.
For the cultural side of the module, we will be using articles and material extracted from Italian media. In the second term you will be expected to read two set books:
