At Essex University we offer a wide range of modules in German: language modules on all levels, thematic modules (e.g. Three Countries - One Language; Home from Home: Influential German Expatriates in Britain; German Translation, Interpreting and Subtitling Skills), modules for language degree students and European Studies students, or outside option modules to complement degree courses like Philosophy, Literature, Economics, Politics and many others, with flexible entry points according to previous language learning.

Students without any previous knowledge of German can fast-track into a German language degree course via our Intensive Initial German module which includes a four-week summer module in Germany.

If German is your major language information can be found on the major information page.

Our language degree students spend their third year abroad, and if they go to Germany they will study either in Berlin or Trier.

Our full-time staff members are German native speakers with strong links to Germany. In our modules at Essex University we use authentic, up-to-date material, multi-media labs and offer additional conversation classes with German native speakers.

For members of the public who wish to study German in an academic setting with all the facilities of the University campus, we offer a very flexible and friendly Open Language Programme.

We are part of a lively language unit at the University of Essex, where you can study five languages in total (French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish) plus Chinese and Arabic as a self-funded option.
