This module is open to students who have previously passed LA140 Advanced French (or equivalent). LA157 will enable students to further develop their language skills, specifically through the study of French cinema. They will study a set programme of French films, which will be chosen to represent the history of French cinema and to cover different genres.

Students will refine the following (transferable) skills:

- Aural comprehension will be at a premium as students listen to the sound tracks of films and carry out extensive work on extracts.

- Written and spoken skills: awareness of language registers and style, with a specific focus on colloquial French.

- Note taking while watching films and listening to a limited number of set piece lectures.

- Group work: collaboration in producing summaries, interviews and critical reviews of films, based on the reading of published criticism.

- Presentations concerning individual films, directors or themes.
