This module is open to students who previously passed LA140 Advanced French. It is designed to help you cope successfully with your Year (or vacation period) Abroad. The emphasis will be on vocabulary acquisition, the use of specific language functions, the consolidation of grammatical knowledge, and the ongoing development of all language skills. The main topics, apart from the Year Abroad, are the problems in the banlieues, French gastronomy and eating habits, music and local radio stations. We will start by looking at these themes as seen from the city of Lyon and will then expand to the rest of France. There are two set books to be read and studied. You will be introduced to more structured prose writing (such as commentaires on the set books) and you will participate in substantial filmed role-plays.
