Knowledge Gateway at Essex

The Knowledge Gateway at our Colchester Campus will build on our reputation as one of the UK’s top ten research universities. Our development of this 43-acre site will offer businesses and organisations state-of-the-art facilities and new opportunities to work closely with us.

  • State-of-the-art facilities for business, research and enterprise
  • Flagship building for Institute for Democracy and Conflict Resolution designed by leading architect
  • Up to 2,000 jobs to be created
  • Includes office village, hotel, leisure and retail facilities, accommodation for 1,300 students and a private residential development.

Official Knowledge Gateway site.

Institute for Democracy and Conflict Resolution

At the heart of the Knowledge Gateway will be our Institute for Democracy and Conflict Resolution (IDCR). This will draw on our internationally recognised strengths in sociology, economics, law and government plus the expertise of the Institute for Social and Economic Research and the Human Rights Centre.

A unique building will house the IDCR designed by world-renowned architect and Essex alumnus Daniel Libeskind. From this base the IDCR will work with national and international organisations to play a leading, independent role in forging and maintaining sustainable democracies and preventing and resolving conflicts worldwide.

Research and business at the Knowledge Gateway

Alongside the IDCR, the Knowledge Gateway will give businesses the opportunity to access our other research strengths including finance, business, technology and science while developing strong partnerships with us.

We hope the development will also attract like-minded enterprises from small businesses and governmental and non-governmental bodies through to major blue-chip companies.

Other features will include an office village, hotel, leisure and retail facilities. The site will also eventually accommodate up to 1,300 student bedrooms and a private residential development.

The project is a joint venture between Carisbrooke Alliance and the University of Essex.
