Access your email

You can access your email through two supported methods: Microsoft Outlook 2010 and Outlook Webmail.

On campus - Microsoft Outlook 2010

Microsoft Outlook 2010 is our supported method of reading email on campus and gives you access to your email, calendar, contacts and tasks.

To open Outlook 2010: On any lab or staff PC, go to StartAll ProgramsMicrosoft OfficeMicrosoft Outlook 2010

Off-campus - Outlook Webmail

Outlook Webmail is our supported method of reading email off-campus (you can also use Webmail on campus if you prefer it to Outlook 2010).

Go to https://email.essex.ac.uk/ and sign in with your University email address and password.

Students: You may be asked to log in twice - we realise this isn't ideal and we're working on it.

Set up email on your personal computer or mobile device

Setting up your email is a bit like setting up a new computer: You do it only once. After you configure your email account, you never have to hassle with it again—unless, of course, you get a new computer or device.

On your mobile phone or tablet

  • Apple iOS

    1. On your device go to:

      SettingsMail, Contacts, CalendarsAdd AccountExchange

    2. Enter the following:

      Email (your University email address)
      Password (your University password)
      Description eg My University email

    3. Choose whether to sync Mail, Calendars, Contacts, Reminders and then choose Save. Please allow a few moments for your device to synchronise.

  • Android

    1. On your device go to:

      SettingsAccountsAdd accountMicrosoft Exchange ActiveSync (this may also be called Corporate).

    2. Enter the following:

      Email (your University email address)
      Password (your University password)

    3. Choose Next. Your device will auto-discover the required settings.

      If auto-discover fails, manually enter the following settings:

      Undergraduate and postgraduate taught students Staff and postgraduate research students
      Email address Your University email address Your University email address
      Domain\user name Your University email address Your University email address
      Account type Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync
      Exchange server outlook.office365.com email.essex.ac.uk
      Use secure connection (SSL)

      Choose Next, and then choose OK to activate.

    4. Choose OK to allow Remote security administration. Select your sync options then choose NextActivateDone. Please allow a few moments for your device to synchronise.
  • Windows Phone

    1. Open Settings menu and choose Email + Accounts.
    2. Choose Add an account, then choose Outlook.
    3. Enter your University email address and password, and then choose Sign in.
    4. Change username to your University email address eg mylogin@essex.ac.uk
    5. Leave the domain option blank, and then choose Sign in. At the prompt choose the Advanced option.
    6. For server, enter:

      email.essex.ac.uk (for staff and postgraduate research students)
      outlook.office365.com(for undergraduate and postgraduate taught students)

    7. Choose Show all settings and confirm that Server requires encrypted (SSL) connection is enabled.
    8. Choose Sign in. Please allow a few moments for your device to synchronise.

  • BlackBerry

    1. From System Settings choose Accounts: Set up email, contacts, calendar.
    2. Choose Add Account then choose the Advanced button at the bottom of the screen.
    3. Enter the following information:

      Description eg My University email
      Username (your University email address)
      Email address (your University email address)
      Password (your University password)
      Server, enter either:

      email.essex.ac.uk (for staff and postgraduate research students)
      outlook.office365.com(for undergraduate and postgraduate taught students)

    4. Leave all other settings as default and choose Next.
    5. Choose whether to sync Email, Contacts, Calendars, Tasks or Memos, and then choose Done. Please allow a few moments for your device to synchronise.

On your personal computer or laptop

  • Outlook 2010 for Windows

    1. Open Outlook 2010.
    2. If the Microsoft Outlook 2010 Startup screen appears choose Next, otherwise choose FileAdd Account.
    3. Enter your University email address and password, then choose Next.
    4. After a short moment you should see three green ticks indicating that your email account is successfully configured. Choose Finish.
    5. You must restart Outlook 2010 for the new account to appear.
    6. Open Outlook 2010 and sign in with your University email address and password.

  • Windows Mail

    1. Start Windows Mail.
    2. Click ToolsAccountsAddE-mail AccountNext.
    3. Set your Display name, and then click Next.
    4. Set your E-mail address to your University email address, and then click Next.
    5. Set up e-mail servers as followed: Incoming e-mail server type IMAP

      Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server:
      email.essex.ac.uk (for staff and postgraduate research students)
      outlook.office365.com (for undergraduate and postgraduate taught students)

      Outgoing e-mail server (SMTP) name: smtp.essex.ac.uk
      Tick Outgoing server requires authentication

    6. Click Next.
    7. Enter your University email address and password, then click Next.
    8. Tick Do not download my e-mail and folders at this time, and then click Finish.
    9. Back in the Accounts window, select the account you just created, and click Properties.
    10. Click the Adanced tab, set Outgoing mail port to 465, Incoming mail port to 993, and tick both This server requires a secure connection (SSL), and then click OK.
    11. Click Yes to test your configuration and download your email.

  • Outlook 2011 for Mac OS X

    1. Open Outlook 2011.
    2. Choose OutlookPreferences.
    3. Choose Accounts then add an Exchange Account.
    4. Enter your University email address and password, and ensure Configure automatically is ticked.
    5. Choose Add Account. After a brief moment, a pop-up window will appear. Ensure Always use my response for this server is ticked, and then choose Allow.

  • Mac Mail for Mac OS X

    1. Open Mac Mail.
    2. If you do not already have a mail account set up you will be prompted to add a new account. Otherwise go to MailAccounts.
    3. Choose Exchange mail account, and then choose Continue.
    4. Enter your University email address and password, and then choose Continue.
    5. After a brief pause, a summary of your settings will be displayed. Choose Continue.
    6. You now have a choice of what apps you want to use with this account – Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Notes and Reminders.
    7. Choose Done.

Other email clients (settings for IMAP, SMTP and POP)

We recommend using IMAP instead of POP. If your client only supports POP then please ensure it is configured to not leave message copies on the server. Doing so will cause performance issues.
