Teacher education
The International Academy offers a range of professional English language teaching programmes. Our taught MA ensures you develop professionally and personally, by relating the theory
of TESOL/TEFL to its practical application within the English language teaching context.
In addition to developing and extending your role as a classroom teacher, we provide training in the skills required to develop your professional career as a trainer, mentor,
curriculum and materials designer, and where appropriateprovide you with preparation for a PhD.
MA Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
Our MA Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is designed for teachers with
some relevant experience who would like to extend their knowledge and improve their skills in this field.
Our course aims to provide a sound understanding of key TESOL related issues and the ability to apply TESOL theory to practice. The skills areas included in our syllabus
relate to the management and organisation of language teaching, the evaluation and production of teaching materials,
critical reflection on actual classroom practice and a mastery of essential research skills required for the successful completion of a Masters dissertation project.
The course contains a Practicum Module in Term 2.
Alternatively, a PG Certificate Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) (60 credits)
and a PG Diploma Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) (120 credits) can also be completed,
rather than the full MA TESOL (180 credits including the dissertation).
MA Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL)
Our MA Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) provides a professional English teaching programme
for those with little or no experience of teaching.
In collaboration with the Department of Language and Linguistics, we deliver vocationally relevant training both in the practical and academic spheres, and give you the chance to gain practical
expertise in key teaching methods and techniques, as well as a systematic understanding of recent theory, research findings and issues in language teaching, language learning,
applied linguistics, and related fields.
