Pre-Masters courses
The International Academy offers an innovative series of Graduate
Diplomas and a Graduate Certificate which provide an entry route onto a
postgraduate course at our University. Our pre-Masters courses are aimed at
developing the necessary academic skills and language proficiency to enable
you to cope with postgraduate study in the UK.
Progress to a Masters course
Successful completion of one of our pre-Masters Graduate Diplomas will
guarantee progression to a relevant Masters course at the University of Essex. With
well-established links to other departments, schools and centres at our
University, you can feel confident that studying at pre-Masters level will
equip you with the necessary skills to succeed on your postgraduate course.

Graduate Certificate English for Academic
Purposes

Graduate Diploma English for Academic Purposes
Our
Graduate Diploma English for Academic Purposes (EAP) has a
strong focus on English language and academic skills
development. This one-year course, running from October until
June, provides a bridge between undergraduate and postgraduate
study by enhancing your intellectual and academic skills. In
particular, you will learn how to:
- think critically;
- construct arguments; and
- develop your qualitative and quantitative research methods.
You will also gain an introduction to intercultural
communication.

Subject-based Graduate Diplomas
Our subject-based pre-Masters Graduate Diplomas are ideal if
you need to improve your subject knowledge, as well as your
English language and study skills, before undertaking a Masters
course at our University.
You will study modules within the International Academy and
your chosen academic department, and gain direct experience of
study in a relevant discipline. Successful completion of this
course will secure your entry to your chosen Masters and also
greatly assist if you intend to undertake further doctoral
research.
Eligibility
You are eligible to study one of our pre-Masters courses if you have
graduated with a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, or have studied for a
three-year diploma, but do not meet the entry criteria for a Masters course.

Alumni loyalty fee discount
If you successfully complete a pre-Masters course at the International
Academy, you will have the opportunity to take advantage of a discounted fee for
alumni.
