A Checklist - Have you ...?

Finances

  • Paid your tuition fee deposit
  • Paid your accommodation security deposit (if you are living in University accommodation)
  • Arranged the transfer of funds from your home country to the UK for tuition fees and living expenses
  • Arranged for sufficient cash to support yourself and any dependants for the first few days in the UK.
  • Arranged for a bank reference (which might make opening a bank account easier when you arrive)

Visa

  • If applicable, applied for your entry clearance (visa) to study in the UK from the British Embassy, Consulate or High Commission in your home country

Accommodation and Arrival in the UK

  • Returned your signed accommodation tenancy agreement (if you are living in University accommodation)
  • Arranged temporary accommodation if necessary

Travel and Insurance

  • Booked flights (train/bus) to the UK
  • Arranged suitable medical insurance (if you intend to stay in the UK for less than six months)
  • Arranged adequate travel insurance
  • Information

Disability?

  • If you have a disability, impairment, medical condition, mental health difficulty or specific learning difficulty, such as dyslexia, contact the Disability team disab@essex.ac.uk  or dial +44 (0)1206 872365 or +44 (0)1206 873444 to make enquiries about whether you will qualify for UK disability funding. However, please be aware that most international students do not qualify for this funding except in very limited circumstances. This may mean that you need to fund these costs yourself.

Packing

  • Packed a list of important phone numbers and addresses (e.g. Accommodation Service, emergency phone numbers in your home country.)
  • Packed several passport pictures (e.g. for Police registration, NUS card)
  • Packed the following in your hand luggage to take along on the flight (especially international students on a student visa):
    • A valid passport
    • Proof of admission to University of Essex/International academy on a full-time programme of study
    • Proof of sufficient funds to pay your tuition fees and your living expenses and those of any dependants without having to work or to claim from public funds in the UK
      Entry clearance (visa), if required, from the British Embassy, Consulate or High Commission in your home country
    • Any required health or vaccination certificates, such as for tuberculosis
    • Any other relevant original documents, such as originals of qualification certificates
