Geographic Transition
Getting used to living in a new city or country can be tough on anyone.
But remember that you are not on your own.
Listed below is a number of issues students have encountered in the past –
perhaps you may have already anticipated them.
Size of Campus:
Depending on which campus you are based, you
will have to get used to the size. The Colchester campus is spread out over five
squares and may seem overwhelming at first.
Class Location:
You may have classes in any of the smaller
class rooms or one of the larger lecture theatres and this may at first leave
you feeling lost and often rushed.
New city/country:
Feeling lost is not uncommon for new
students, remember most students will have travelled hundreds or thousands of
miles to a new county or continent, however, like you they will become more
familiar with their new surrounding and language. Most students will need to negotiate a new
transportation system.
A reassuring note:
The advantage of being at the University of Essex is that although the campus
may seem large, it provides a wide range of services which includes, the
main Library, health centre, accommodation, cafes, shops, students union, banks ,
computing facilities, the sports centre and many more facilities. If you
feel lost, remember that our security staff in the information centre are
always willing to help you find your way.
Other Resources:
Before you leave, it is a good idea to familiarise yourself with the
layout of
Colchester campus.
