Course Overview

The course is designed for both native and non-native speakers who may not necessarily have experience as teachers.  It enables them to teach in most places abroad where English is taught.

The CELTA places great importance on the quality of the programmes, trainers and assessment procedures.  To ensure that all courses are run to the same high standard, all courses are approved by the University of Cambridge ESOL, and all courses are moderated by an external assessor.

Course structure

The course programmes are designed by the International Academy, based on specifications produced by Cambridge ESOL.

Core Areas Time spent
Teaching practice (at 2 levels, one below Intermediate) 6 hours
Input sessions (teaching practice feedback and preparation tutorials) 100 hours
Classroom observation (hours not including peer observation) 8 hours
Personal study (reading, assignment research, lesson preparation) 50 hours

Assessment

  • Assessment is by course work and there is no final examination.  The International Academy also provides a report on performance and achievement for each candidate on three criteria:
  • Teaching Practice - the assessment is based on the candidate's overall performance over the 6 hours.
  • Assignments - there are 4 short assignments.  Two explore aspects of teaching and learning English at an adult level, one involves working on the language system of English and one is a reflection essay on classroom.  The assignments are marked by the International Academy and moderated by an external assessor.
  • Professional skills - this is based on a candidate's overall performance on the course.

To be successful, a candidate must pass all components.
