Graduate Diploma in Psychological Studies with English for Academic Purposes
Overview
This course aims to help you improve your
language and study skills together with your knowledge of psychology, prior to
embarking on further postgraduate study. Completion of the Graduate Diploma at the required level will normally qualify
you for entry to an appropriate Masters level course in the
Department
of Psychology.
The course aims to:
- develop the necessary study skills and language proficiency to be
able to cope with graduate study in a British university
- develop an understanding of critical thinking, including how to
construct an argument
- practice and develop basic research skills and an understanding of
research methods
- acquire knowledge and understanding of the theoretical foundations
and current issues in psychology

English for Academic Purposes
These modules facilitate core English language and study skills development
that is required for successful postgraduate study in the context of the UK
generally, and at the University of Essex in particular. It aims to enhance your

Critical Thinking
This module is intended to teach you essential intellectual skills, in
particular how to think critically and how to construct arguments. The
process is aimed at enhancing general reflective skills. To find out more,

Research Methods for Psychology and the Social Sciences
This module provides you with an introduction to both quantitative and
qualitative research methods, as well as examination of the underlying ethical
issues in conducting research, the philosophical grounding on which research
methods rely and the problematic nature of objectivity in research. You will be encouraged to reflect
on the prevailing research methodologies in your discipline and to relate the

Entry criteria
A relevant degree (minimum of lower second classification or equivalent), or
three-year higher education qualification from a recognised institution. For
applicants whose native language is not English, a minimum of IELTS 5.5 with 5.5
in every component, or recognised equivalent, is
required. Decisions on an applicant’s
academic qualifications will be made in close consultation with the Department.
