Essex English Language Programme

(formerly known as Preparatory English Programme)

Who is the programme for?

This programme is designed for students who need to improve their general and academic English. The programme runs throughout the year and is divided into five-week study blocks. Students may join in October, November, January, February, April, May or July. 

Programme Content

The Essex English Language Programme (EELP) consists of three staged modules which provide students with English language preparation from initiate through to post-intermediate level:

  •  Foundations of English (initiate level, CEFR A1)
  •  Preparatory English for Academic Purposes (intermediate levels, CEFR A2/B1)
  •  Further Studies in English for Academic Purposes (post-intermediate levels CEFR B2/C1)

Each module will provide language study for up to 40 weeks and Individual Study Plans will be designed for each student, depending on level and study goals. The Individual Study Plan will be updated in line with each student’s rate of progress. The two higher level modules will focus on four skills preparation within English for Academic Purposes.

EELP includes the following areas of English language study:

  • Grammar and Use
  • General and Academic Vocabulary
  • General and Academic Reading
  • General and Academic Writing
  • General and Academic Listening
  • General and Academic Speaking
  • Presentation Skills
  • Study Skills
  • Reading Skills
  • Exam Preparation

How is the programme delivered?

There are twenty-four hours of taught classes, tutorials and guided self-study per week.

Learning Support

Self-study and task-based materials will be provided in each class. Students have access to computer labs, University Library, audio-visual facilities and they are also encouraged to make use of resources based in the Department’s Self-Access Room.

Teaching will be based on communicative class work, with regular class preparation and class follow-up study assignments. Tutorials will be used to provide regular feedback on performance and progress, and to guide students towards effective independent study.

What is the length of the programme?

EELP runs throughout the year and is divided in five-week study blocks.

Start Dates:

2012

  • 28 May, 16 July, 8 October, 12 November.

2013

  • 14 January, 18 February, 22 April, 28 May, 15 July, 12 August 2013.

  • The International Academy teaches four terms per year. The term dates are as follows:

 

  • Autumn Term: 10 October 2011 - 16 December 2011
  • Spring Term: 16 January 2012 - 23 March 2012
  • Summer Term: 23 April 2012 - 29 June 2012
  • Summer Vacation Term: 16 July 2012 - 21 September 2012

Entry requirements

There is no minimum language requirement. The higher level modules of EELP can be taken before joining the Pre-sessional programme
