Proximal Education Research Lab

Welcome to PERL
PERL is a new multidisciplinary research program run by the International
Academy. The aim of this research is to enrich the design, generation, and
dissemination of subject matter curriculum to a wider audience of learners both
at home and overseas.
PERL derives its initial strategy through the concept of Proximal dimension
and Tacit knowledge originally developed by Polanyi in (1967). The thrust of the
various research projects are the creation of platforms and environments for
knowledge delivery that facilitate, rather than hinder, a greater level of
communication and interaction between learners and tutors.
The use of Multi Aspectual, MA, approach is considered and to give the notion
of Proximality a greater level of richness and cohesion. An academic journal,
IJMAP International Journal of
Multi Aspectual Practice, has recently been launched to give a platform for
discussing and understanding the usefulness and applications of Multi Aspectual
Practice.
PERL welcomes collaborators from academia and industry.
PERL is directed by
Dr. Kamaran Fathulla.
Current projects:
This project explores the use and development of 3D virtual reality
applications to deliver IA courses to home and overseas based students.
This project explores the use of diagrams by both lecturers and students in
various phases of the learning cycle. Potential applications include integrating
the use of diagrams into curriculum design, use of diagrams in assessment of
student’s skills and progress, etc.
This project looks at improving student’s performances in programming modules
through the use of 3D programming environments. Within this project a TALIF fund
(COPE)
has been secured to explore the use of Alice 3D programming environment to
create tutorial sets that are customized to meet various student’s cultural
preferences and backgrounds.
