The Human
Rights Centre (HRC) at the
University
of Essex enjoys a global
reputation for its teaching, research and advocacy of human rights. The Essex
Internet Encyclopaedia of Human Rights extends upon the contribution which the
HRC has made to the teaching and practice of human rights throughout the world
through providing an accessible and comprehensive study resource for any one
interested in human rights. The entries contained within this encyclopaedia aim
to provide concise, reliable and detailed summaries of key concepts and aspects
of the theory and practice of human rights. The vast majority of the authors of
the entries are either existing staff or former alumni of the University of Essex,
which testifies to the range and depth of human rights expertise to be found
here.
All of the
entries have been subject to a careful academic review process. Each entry aims
to extend readers’ knowledge and understanding of human rights through careful
and accessible summaries. Many of the entries also contain suggestions for
further reading.
The Human
Rights Centre has been at the forefront of the theory and practice of human
rights for three decades. We have taught generations of students, many of whom
have proceeded to successful careers in the human rights field as practitioners
or as educators. We provide human rights courses at undergraduate, Masters and
Ph.D. levels. Details of these courses can be found here –
