Dissertations and Prizes

Every year we award a prize for the best overall MA Dissertation and a prize for the best Local History MA Dissertation. One of our external examiners recently commented that "Some of the dissertations I examined were exemplary pieces of work, reflecting an extremely professional approach to supervision.”

MA Dissertation Prize

  • 2012: Malte Hinrichsen, Trademark Stereotypes: Racial Images of Slavery, Orient and Colonialism in 20th Century Commodity Culture.
    Malte Hinrichsen has just published his first book Racist Trademarks based on this award-winning Dissertation.

John S Appleby Dissertation Prize

  • 2012: Ian Yearsley, Migration into, out of and within the Rochford Hundred in Essex in 1881

BA Dissertation Prize

  • 2012: Jennifer Axcell - What were the effects of the establishment of African-American entertainment venues and the growing entertainment industry, particularly the rise of ‘Classic’ and ‘Urban Blues’, on African-Americans during the First Great Migration, 1915 to1920?
