Centre for Historical Census and Survey Research (CHCSR)

Centre for Historical Census and Survey Research is dedicated to the history and use of British censuses and surveys, many of which are held in digitised form in the UK Data Archive at the University of Essex. The creation of a centre of excellence in this field is to be achieved through focussing the unique expertise across the University of Essex in the preservation and use of historical digitised data of this type. The staff of the centre are recognised experts in the field.

Core activities include:

  • research in the preservation and use of historical census and survey data, especially that in a digitised form;
  • providing a focus for the research of PhD students in this field;
  • teaching and administering the MA in Digital History, and providing input into the MA in Local, Family and Community History;
  • facilitating the online publication of the work of students and members of staff working in the field.
