Why Study History at Essex?
A flexible and varied curriculum:
Students benefit from a range of courses and modules to suit their particular interests, are trained in research methods, and are given extensive feedback on their written work. There are also opportunities to choose modules from other departments, and to study abroad. MA, MPhil and PhD students can avail themselves of regular contact with their thesis supervisors and research postgraduates also have twice-yearly meetings with supervisory boards comprised of two other members of staff in addition to the supervisor. It is possible to participate in most courses on a part-time basis.
Internationally renowned lecturers and supervisors:
The Department of History is placed second in the UK in the national Research Assessment Exercise. This is an accolade for the ground-breaking research that is done in the Department. 35 per cent of our research was ranked as ‘world-leading’ and a further 35 per cent as ‘internationally excellent’.
Consistently high student satisfaction ratings:
The National Student Surveys of 2008 and 2009 found that History students at Essex were overall satisfied with the quality of their course (99% in 2008; 92% in 2009; 95% in 2010: well above the national average – see
www.unistats.com
).
Extensive library, archive and web resources:
As well as the resources of the
Albert Sloman Library
, students can also avail themselves of easy access to libraries and archives in London and beyond.
