24 August 2012: Death of a former member of staff from the Department of History
We were all very sad to learn of the death of Harry (Heinz) Lubasz on 5 August 2012. Harry was one of the founding members of the Department of History, joining as a Lecturer in History from 1 October 1972. He became Senior Lecturer in 1975, was appointed Reader in 1979 and served as Chairman of the Department of History from 1981 to 1984. He retired in 1995, but continued to teach part-time in the Department until 2000. He maintained links with the Department following his retirement and most recently returned to the University on 15 December 2010 to attend 40 Years of History @ Essex, part of the Department's 40th anniversary celebrations. The photo above shows Harry at this event. Harry was one of the children who escaped the Holocaust to the United Kingdom through the Kindertransport and he devoted much of his teaching and research to the study of Marxism on the one hand and a comparative study of the Holocaust on the other.
The Department is keen to hear from alumni who were taught by Harry between 1972 and 2000; please email the current Head of Department (Dr Alison Rowlands, on email@example.com) if you would like to share your memories of Harry with us.
