Professor James Raven from the Department of History has just won a major Knowledge Exchange grant of over £110,000 from the Economic and Social Research Council for the project Rescuing and Presenting Lost Heritage: Promoting Public Engagement with Marks Hall and the World of the Vanished County House. Professor Raven and his team will work closely with the Marks Hall Estate in order to broaden understanding of the social history of the Marks Hall mansion house and the questions of why it was demolished in the 1950s, and to create a variety of new physical resources that will enable the public to better understand the site and its history. The project will involve archaeological digs on the mansion house site; the creation of a virtual representation of the hall; and a programme of outreach activities that will increase the popular appeal of Marks Hall as a visitor destination.
