Holocaust Memorial Week
21 - 27 January 2013
Since 2007 the University of Essex has marked Holocaust Memorial with a series of events taking place during the week that leads up to or includes 27 January, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp by Soviet troops.
The main theme of this year's programme is the Arts and the Holocaust. Questions that we expect to explore in the course of the week include how the Arts can represent the unrepresentable that is the Holocaust, whether the Arts can help us understand the nature of the Holocaust, and if there is any form of art that is better suited for these tasks than others.
The Holocaust Memorial Week events take place at the University's Colchester campus and at the Minories Art Gallery. A Ceremony of Light to commemorate victims of the Holocaust and other genocides will be held on Square 5 the evening of Friday, 25 January, immediately following the programme at the Lakeside Theatre.
