'I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off.' Daniel Mendelsohn's The Lost: The Search for Six of Six Million and the Personalization of Holocaust Memory.

Dr Nina Fischer, University of Konstanz

Tuesday 22 January 2013

The Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies invited Dr Nina Fischer, University of Konstanz, to talk at their Open Seminar.

Dr Nina Fischer talked about Daniel Mendelsohn's The Lost: In Search of Six of Six Million; part memoir, reportage, mystery, and scholarly detective work. The book tells of a writer's search for the truth behind his family's tragic past in World War II, exploring the nature of time and memory, family and history.

The seminar focused on the preoccupation with the individual victim in current Holocaust commemoration and use Mendelsohn's The Lost as an exemplar of this trend.

The event was part of the University of Essex's Global Alliance partnership with the University of Konstanz, Germany.

Venue: LTB 10, University of Essex, Wivenhoe Park, Colchester CO4 3SQ
