E-mail: andrewb.phillips@lineone.net OCCASIONAL PAPERS – NEW SERIESThis New Series of Occasional Papers is designed to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the foundation of our Society in 1852. It has been funded by the Society’s Publications Development Fund which has proved so successful since its establishment in 1992. The Society is pleased that the New Series is being produced in collaboration with the Essex Record Office. The New Series aims to provide well-illustrated popular guides to topics of archaeological and historical interest relating to the historic county of Essex. They will concentrate on providing topics previously neglected, and, it is hoped, may stimulate further research. No.1 John Hunter, Field Systems in Essex (published in 2004) Available from: Dr. Chris Thornton, 75 Victoria Road, Maldon, Essex, CM9 5HE. Price in UK: £5.95 per copy including postage and packing. Please send your address plus cheques in sterling payable to “Essex Society for Archaeology and History”. Overseas orders: Please e-mail an enquiry first to Dr. Thornton: ccthorn@essex.ac.uk PUBLICATIONS DEVELOPMENT FUNDThe Society’s annual journal is of outstanding quality, partly due to the generous funding of some of the archaeological articles by Essex County Council and other bodies. However, historical articles rarely obtain grants and, in order to overcome this disadvantage, the Society set up the Publications Development Fund in 1993. It was agreed from the outset that the capital should be inalienable and that grants to assist publication would be made only from the interest earned. The Fund has grown steadily from donations, bequests, royalties and (recently) from Gift Aid relief and now stands at over £22,000. With the present low interest rates and the Society’s intention to publish more historical articles, it is important to keep the Fund growing. Bequests or any donations, in cash or kind, will be most welcome and should be sent to Bill Abbott bill.abbott@btinternet.com. The signing a Gift Aid declaration enables the Society to increase the value of the donation at no cost whatsoever to the donor. ESSEX PLACE-NAME BOOKLETSThe Essex Place-name Project (EPNP), adopted by the Society in 1996, seeks to record and investigate field names and minor place names for the historic county of Essex. The initial stage of the project involves volunteers, individuals, groups, and local societies, transcribing the mid 19th century tithe awards for Essex onto a database. The database is available for public consultation at the Essex Record Office and interested volunteers should also inquire at the Essex Record Office for further information. Print-outs from the database are being made available through collaboration between the Society and the Essex Record Office. Each booklet contains tables of names and other data taken from the tithe award plus a map. Booklets come in three sizes, small, medium and large depending on the size of the parish and the amount of data contained in the booklet. They are priced at £2.50 (small), £4.50 (medium) and £6.50 (large). Postage and packing is charged at cost. Available from the Essex Record Office, Wharf Road, Chelmsford. Tel. 01245 244648. E-mail: ero@essexcc.gov.uk Credit card orders are accepted. Parish booklets available at December 2004. All are tithe maps and awards unless otherwise stated.
