History Alumni Event celebrating 40 years of History at Essex Alumni cakes

The Department of History at the University of Essex celebrated its 40th anniversary with a hugely enjoyable alumni reunion. Nearly a hundred guests gathered at firstsite in Colchester on 12 October - the same date on which the Department held its first Departmental Meeting 40 years ago. There was plenty of time for former students to chat to each other and to current and past members of staff over wine and canapés; other highlights of the evening included a reflection on 40 years of History at Essex by Professor Steve Smith; an amusing mock 'exam' paper for alumni to fill out; and a pyramid of birthday cupcakes sporting the Department's clock motif to round off the celebrations. Click on the cakes to see a selection of photographs from the event.

Reconnect and Share Your Story:

What’s happened since graduation? The department would love to hear your stories about life after university. Share your stories and memories for the website, and read up on your fellow classmates!

You can email us with updates and even contribute a photo if you like (email histug, add @essex.ac.uk for full email address)

You can also keep in touch with news and events in the Department of History. Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook, and check out Alison Rowland’s Head of Department blog.

Looking for classmates and lost friends? Essex: Connect is our exclusive online community for Essex alumni, and our friends and supporters. It gives you all the latest news from the University, details of forthcoming events, reunions and discussion groups. You can also create and update your own profile and trace old friends.

Get Involved and Make a Difference:

Our students value insight from alumni. Your experiences and stories provide significant knowledge students use when deciding their paths after graduation. From success to mistakes, just getting started or well established in your career, we value your experiences and encourage you to share them with current students.

Would you like to speak with students?

Students are always interested in career paths other History Alumni follow. The Department of History, along with the History Society, hosts casual lunchtime discussions where students can speak to alumni about careers after graduation. All career paths and positions are welcome. We want our students to know the variety of fields their degree can take them. If you would like to get involved please email us (histug; add @essex.ac.uk for full email address).

Make a gift

Every donation makes a difference in the lives of students. Your generosity helps us to invest in our students today and in the future. That could mean scholarships and bursaries to take student hardships, or funding for sports and the arts to enhance campus life. If you would like to make a contribution you can donate online at or email the Development and Alumni Relations Office.
