The Department of History at the University of Essex celebrated its 40th anniversary with a hugely enjoyable alumni reunion. Nearly a hundred guests gathered at firstsite in Colchester on 12 October - the same date on which the Department held its first Departmental Meeting 40 years ago. There was plenty of time for former students to chat to each other and to current and past members of staff over wine and canapés; other highlights of the evening included a reflection on 40 years of History at Essex by Professor Steve Smith; an amusing mock 'exam' paper for alumni to fill out; and a pyramid of birthday cupcakes sporting the Department's clock motif to round off the celebrations. Students are always interested in career paths other History Alumni follow. The Department of History, along with the History Society, hosts casual lunchtime discussions where students can speak to alumni about careers after graduation. All career paths and positions are welcome. We want our students to know the variety of fields their degree can take them.
