Your fitness to practise is monitored throughout the educational programme as follows:

On entering the School you will have been assessed in respect of your ‘fitness to practise’ to commence the programme of study.  This included:

  • CRB check
  • Occupational Health Check
  • Face-to-face interview
  • Referees

During the period of study you will have:

  • An annual CRB check
  • Be required to provide an annual statement of their continued fitness to practise (nursing only)
  • Be progressed to the next year of study by the School through its Professional Suitability Group (nursing only)

At the conclusion of the programme:

  • The Head of Nursing provides to the NMC a statement confirming the student’s fitness to enter the profession.

Maintaining Fitness to Practise

If an incident occurs during your programme of study that compromises your fitness to practise, the School will take action on the matter.  These actions identified below represent a range of options for the School and are not necessarily followed in sequence.

1.    You will be required to meet with the programme leader to give your account of the incident.

2.    The Head of School may ask for a Professional Suitability Group to be convened. This School panel comprises of educational staff, service users and practitioners.  The group will examine the case and recommend to the Head of School that the matter should be dealt with within the School or investigated further - for details on this please review the UG (pg37) or PG Handbook (pg49).

3.  The Head of School may refer the matter, following investigation to the University’s Professional Practice and Conduct Committee as a Breach of Professional Conduct and Termination of Training Procedure.

If the incident is considered to be serious it may result in your educational programme being discontinued. Should an incident occur that compromises your fitness to practise, you are recommended to seek immediate support and guidance from the University’s Student Support Service.
