Health and safety training courses
All staff need to be competent to meet their responsibilities and the University's and departmental health and safety standards related to their work. Staff must receive adequate health and safety training on being recruited and when exposed to new risks or taking on new responsibilities. This is a legal requirement.
Those with management responsibilities need to be aware of relevant health and safety legislation and how to manage health and safety in accordance with the University's policies and standards.
All staff need to be able to work in a safe and healthy manner and all new staff must have a health and safety induction. Please refer to the health and safety competence and training matrix (.docx) or speak with your line manager for details on the training required for your role. Regular face-to-face courses
The courses below are provided regularly and can be booked via HR Organiser. Additional courses are provided on demand. Courses can be arranged for specific departments/teams on request, or you can add yourself to the waiting list for the relevant course.

For those with health and safety management responsibilities in high-risk areas, we run three-day IOSH Managing Safely courses. These will be offered directly to the members of staff who meet the requirements.

Courses arranged on request
Courses can be arranged for specific departments/teams on request, or you can contact us to be added to a waiting list. We normally need a minimum of eight delegates to run each course.
Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH)
Audience
Staff who may be required to carry out or co-ordinate COSHH assessments.
Session
This course will enable you to produce suitable and sufficient COSHH assessments as required by the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations.
The course takes a learner-centred approach in order to maximise understanding, involves syndicate exercises and direct trainer input. The Health and Safety team will provide post-course support to ensure delegates feel confident undertaking COSHH assessments.

Incident Investigation Master Class
Audience
Staff who carry out incident investigations as part of their job.
Duration
One hour 15 minutes.
Session
This new course is for staff who carry out incident investigations as part of their job. You will find out what are the three main causes of incidents in the workplace and carry out your own incident investigation using a case study. The course also provides an update on the University incident reporting procedure at the University and what you can do to improve reporting. It will give you a legislation update on the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR).

Manual Handling
Audience
Staff who undertake substantial manual handling operations.
Session
Provides staff with the necessary knowledge to improve their manual handling operations and use a safer manual handling technique. The course takes a learner-centred approach in order to maximise understanding, and involves syndicate exercises and direct trainer input.
Pre-requisites
To make the training relevant to attendees the high-risk manual handling activities must be risked assessed before training. The risk assessment outcomes will be used in the training and the practical side will use the activities. To discuss manual handling training and risk assessment please contact safety@essex.ac.uk
It is strongly recommended that if you have injuries or medical conditions that prevent you from safely undertaking manual handling activities, including pregnancy, you do not attend.

Fire Safety training can be delivered as part of a departmental team meeting. Fire Safety training is also available for specialist roles such as Patrol Officers, Student Ambassadors and for complex events.
Safe Use of Stepladders
Audience
Staff who use stepladders.
Session
This course will provide you with the necessary information and knowledge for working at height using stepladders and undertake pre-use visual checks of equipment.
The course involves syndicate exercises and direct trainer input.
Duration
One hour.
