Schools, departments and centres

Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in the Humanities (CISH)

CISH aims to encourage and promote collaboration between the disciplines, and establish a focus for a broad range of modules and courses whose interests range over three continents: US Studies, Latin American Studies, European Studies, as well as fostering an exciting curriculum across the Humanities.

Disciplines covered by CISH

Department of History

Our Department of History is second in the UK for research, and has a 93 per cent student satisfaction rating. Founded in 1972 the department has developed a strong individual character. We are concerned with the local and the global, our academics teach and write about everything from households and communities in Essex to witchcraft in Germany, from shopping to sex, from slaves in the Americas to aristocrats in France, from oil to food, from revolutions in England, China and Russia to the struggle for racial equality in South Africa and the United States.

Centres

Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies

We offer degrees in literature, film, drama, and creative writing, either as specialised paths or in combination. Our Department has a strong international perspective, apparent both in the background of its staff and in their research interests, which includes, among many others, cultural history, drama and performance, world cinema, and the literature and cultures of the Americas.

Centres

East 15 Acting School

We offer an extraordinarily dynamic portfolio of degrees at East 15 that span many areas of training and study of performance for actors, directors and technical theatre specialists. At our campuses in Loughton and Southend, we continue to draw on our long and successful traditions and combine this with a keen sense of the changing world of theatre today. Training is by professionals for professionals.

International Academy

Our International Academy offers pre-undergraduate pathways including foundation and second-year entry options, undergraduate four-year degrees with an accelerated second-year entry, pre-Masters Graduate Diplomas and Masters degrees.

Our teachers help our students gain the necessary subject knowledge and skills, and develop a critical and reflective approach to their studies. Classes are run in small groups of approximately 12 and students receive considerable individual attention.

Centres

School of Philosophy and Art History

The School of Philosophy and Art History was founded in August 2011, born out of the merger of two long-standing departments at Essex: the Department of Art History and Theory and the Department of Philosophy. It offers single-discipline degrees at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in both Philosophy and in Art History, as well as opportunities for exploring interdisciplinary themes at the intersection of art and philosophy.

Art History at Essex

We provide an excellent environment for the pursuit of both teaching and research in art history, and have repeatedly been awarded top grades in national assessments of teaching quality and research standing.

Philosophy at Essex

We are internationally recognised for our unique combination of Anglo-American and European continental philosophy. We are committed to fostering a variety of philosophical approaches, and to developing links between philosophy and other disciplines.  In the last Research Assessment Exercise we came first for continental philosophy, as well as being placed in the top ten philosophy research departments in the UK, top 10 in the Guardian's ranking of philosophy departments in the UK in both 2010 and 2011.
