    Economic and political events dominate domestic and international news and impact on our day-to-day lives as well as shaping the future. In this course, you will explore all major areas of economics and political science, including macro- and microeconomics, political systems and political ideas, and the use of modern research techniques.

 

  • BA Elections, Public Opinion and Parties (L290) (subject to approval)
    Our BA Elections, Public Opinions and Parties provides a thorough training in all major areas of political science. You will discuss the most important concepts in the study of democracy and political representation: political parties and their policies, political participation and elections, voters and public opinion. In addition, you will be trained in the use of modern techniques of political research.

    Explore all major areas of international relations, including conflict and security studies, international political economy, political theory, and the use of modern research techniques.

    Why do political ideas, from Platos Republic to Rawls Law of Peoples, matter so much? Why is the state of the economy so important for the outcome of elections? How and why do governments try to regulate markets? This course can not only give you an insight into these questions and many more, but also encourages you to reflect critically on fundamental theoretical and ethical issues.

 

  • BA Political Economics (L150) (subject to approval)
    Our BA Political Economics focuses on political and commercial decision-making in an interconnected world. The course prepares students to work in international and national governmental and non-governmental agencies; obtain strategic roles in private companies and in politics; and to develop policy and decision-making through research and analysis.

 

  • BA Politics (L200)
    Why do people vote the way they do? How and why do governments interact with society? What determines a countrys foreign policy? How do countries interact with each other and why do international conflicts arise? The BA Politics course can give you an insight into these questions and many more.

 

  • BA Politics with Human Rights (LM29)
    What is the nature of the changing global system and how does it have an impact on individual well-being? What have been the major achievements, setbacks, and challenges to the global human rights movement? The course combines requisite and optional modules in the Department of Government with core modules in the Human Rights Centre.

 

  • PovertyBA Politics and Law (LM21)
    This BA Politics and Law course examines the most important rules that govern the relationship between the various branches of government and between the individual citizen and the state. It asks a number of large questions about our democracy, such as Who should decide our laws politicians or judges?

 

Joint Courses

 

  • LLB Law and Politics (ML12)
    LLB Law and Politics provides students with a rigorous academic training in the disciplines of Law and Politics. The course enables students to develop the critical, reflexive and analytical skills that are common to both disciplines.

 

  • StonehengeBA Modern History and Politics (LV21)
    Students obtain a thorough grounding in the fields of modern history and politics and are also encouraged to consider how the two disciplines can be integrated.

 

 

  • BA Philosophy and Politics (LV25)
    Some of the most fundamental questions about political life, to do with its principles and ideals, are philosophical in character. This BA brings the disciplines of philosophy and politics together and provides a sound academic grounding in both.

 

  • BA Politics and Modern Languages (LR29)
    This is a four-year course which allows you to combine the study of a wide range of Politics options with the study of one or two Modern Languages (out of French, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese).

 

  • BA Sociology and Politics (LL32)
    These two disciplines offered here by two of the UK's leading social science departments - combine very well together. Both pose broad questions about the world and both offer practical research skills to help students to investigate these questions.
