Summer School in Social Science Data
Analysis
Our Department hosts the highly-acclaimed Essex Summer School in Social
Science Data Analysis, which runs in July and August each year . Our 45+ courses
attract participants from all over the world, to learn from some of the best
social scientists in the world.
The Summer School provides an opportunity for social scientists to make
contact with professional social scientists from other countries. Besides
classroom instruction and daily laboratory work, there are evening seminars on
research topics of special interest. The terms of the original UNESCO grant to
the school stipulated that participants be drawn from all over Europe. This
tradition has been maintained and is now extended internationally. Since its
founding in 1967, the summer school has welcomed participants from most
countries in the world.
The Summer School consists of three two-week sessions. Each session offers a
variety of courses. Courses usually run for two weeks, infrequent exceptions run
for one week only. Courses cover various types of quantitative and qualitative
research methods, research design, techniques for data collection and
measurement as well as mathematics. The language of instruction is English.
Our courses are credit bearing so can count towards continuing professional
development points.
