Frontrunners

Overview for students

What is Frontrunners?

frontrunners is a campus-based placement scheme, open to all registered University of Essex students. By taking part in a frontrunners placement, you will be able to gain and develop transferable employability skills, that will help you when competing for jobs. For more information about the scheme have a look at the FAQs.

What kind of placements does frontrunners offer?

All placements are on campus, based within departments, sections and administrative areas of the University. Placements vary from administration-based roles to project work, and everything in between. Details of current opportunities can be found on the placements page.

Frontrunners and Frontrunners Plus

Frontrunners offers two levels of placement. The frontrunner level is open to all students that have had little or no previous experience of work. These placements offer you the opportunity to gain that first experience. Frontrunner placements are only open to students that have not completed a previous frontrunner placement.

Frontrunners Plus is open to all students, and welcomes students that have completed a frontrunner placement and wish to develop their skills further. Frontrunner Plus placements also offer students that have had some experience, through their studies, voluntary or paid work the opportunity to take their skills to the next level.

Do I get paid?

Yes. frontrunners placements are paid, and you can work up to a maximum of 12 hours a week. Payments are on a weekly basis, and are paid directly into your bank account.

How do I apply?

For further details of current placement opportunities and to apply go to the placements page. Placements have three start points: November, January, and July.

“I thoroughly enjoy working in the International Office. Everyone has been very helpful and friendly since I started. The best thing was when I got my Uni timetable we worked around it to fit my working hours, not the other way round.”
