1 This fee applies to students taking the Graduate Diploma/ Certificate who already hold a Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification in accordance with the Equivalent/ Lower Qualifications policy outlined at the top of this page. Students who do not already hold a Bachelors degree or equivalent qualification will be charged a lower fee of £3,560 for the Diploma and £1,780 for the Certificate.

Equivalent or Lower Qualifications (ELQs)

Home and EU students who already have a qualification at the same, or higher, level as the course they wish to take at the University of Essex will be classified as ELQ students for fees purposes. ELQ fees are higher than standard fees for home and EU students. This is because the University does not receive funding from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) for students assessed as having ELQ fee status. Exemptions to the ELQ policy may apply; this will be determined in individual cases by Graduate Admissions during the admissions process.

ELQ fees for postgraduate taught courses in 2011/12 are as follows:

Laboratory-based courses £11,450
Performance-based courses £8,950
Classroom-based courses £7,450

The fees in the above table are for 12 month Masters courses. ELQ fees for Postgraduate and Graduate Diplomas and Certificates will be charged at 80% and 40% of the above fee rates respectively.

The following exceptions apply:

  1. where the fee for home and EU students on a particular course is higher than the ELQ fee set out in the above table, the higher fee will be charged;
  2. where the ELQ fee is higher than the overseas fee for a particular course, the overseas fee will be charged.

Further information about UK Government policy on students holding Equivalent or Lower Qualifications is available from HEFCE (http://www.hefce.ac.uk/).

Additional Notes

For Masters courses in Health & Human Sciences, including Pre-Registration schemes in Physiotherapy, Nursing, and Speech & Language Therapy, please refer to the department’s web pages.

Part-time fees are calculated from the relevant full-time fee; a part-time student taking a 12 month taught degree over 24 months would pay half the relevant full-time fee in each academic year.  These fees are applicable to study in 2011-12 only. Part-time students continuing their studies in 2012-13 will pay the relevant fee for 2012-13.

* An additional fee of £300 is also payable in respect of materials, services and other professional expenses such as helping to pay for enhanced production budgets, showcases, transport, London venue hire, theatre visits and other expenses related to the training of acting and stage professionals.

** An additional Learning Resource Fee of £75 per module is also payable in respect of materials, services and other professional expenses such as helping to pay for enhanced production budgets, showcases, transport, London venue hire, theatre visits and other expenses related to the training of acting and stage professionals.
