Zoologia Fantastica
Time: 11:00
Venue: University Gallery, Colchester Campus
An exhibition of works by one of Mexico’s most renowned contemporary artists, Francisco Toledo. Drawing upon modern myth and ancestral traditions, Toledo has created a fantastical world inspired by work of writer and poet Jorge Luis Borges.
First published in 1957, Borges’s Handbook of Fantastic Creatures attempts to catalogue all the mythical animals of history and legend in the world. With over 100 creatures, including dragons and centaurs, chimeras and banshees, which sit alongside Morlocks from H. G. Wells's The Time Machine and Lewis Carroll's Cheshire cat. Francisco Toledo, already fascinated with myth, creation and metamorphosis, creates his own interpretation of the strange and bizarre creatures in Borges’s handbook.
Beautifully executed watercolours and pen and ink drawings, this exhibition continues Mexico’s legacy of painters and printmakers who draw on a rich indigenous heritage and life’s inherently surrealist nature.
